What is Music Theory?

In short, music theory is the study of the structure of music and how certain composers chose to write music. Music theory includes several different facets, including but not limited to: counterpoint, harmonic analysis, formal analysis, scales, melody, rhythm, orchestration, Twentieth-Century techniques (12-tone rows, tertian chords, etc.), among others. The great importance of Music Theory is required to achieve maximum potential and proficiency on an instrument/voice/etc. because knowing how music works and how certain pieces of music were constructed is crucial to making musical decisions (this is also known as: Artistry). Artistry is a blend of an individual's interpretation and style. No two musicians should be alike! Why stop at only being a musician, become a [musical] Artist!
